ARKANSAS EVENTS - 2008:  Updated 02 JUL 08

This is a tentative calendar of events.  Changes may be made and additional events will be listed as they become available.  If you know of events you would like to see the AR MVPA participate in contact Evelyn Harless:  evharless@armvpa.com

Note:  Meetings have been changed to Saturdays at 12:30 P.M. unless otherwise noted.  (Members were polled for preference and the choice of days was predominately for Saturday meetings)

 

  • There will not be a January meeting.

  • 11-12 JAN:  World War 2 Weekend - (England, AR) - The 12th Infantry Division is sponsoring a World War 2 Weekend.  All fronts will be represented.  For more information contact Allen Linquist   alinquist@earthlink.net   Web site www.ww2ar.com

  • 17 Feb:  Dinner/Meeting at Mather's Lodge on Petit Jean Mountain (Morrilton) Directions:  Go South on Hwy 9 at Morrilton to Oppelo.  Turn West on Hwy 154 to Petit Jean State Park.  Pass the Cedar Creek Overlook to the Mather's Lodge turn off.

  • 29 Feb- 03 Mar:  The Wings of Freedom Tour will be at the North Little Rock Municipal Airport this weekend.  Three of the most famous WWII bomber aircraft (B-25 Mitchell, B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-24 Liberator) will be on display at the NLR Airport. The planes are part of the Collings Foundation and you can find out more about them on the web at www.collingsfoundation.org.  This is a privately funded organization and your ticket price is tax deductible.  The planes are open for walk-thru tours and flying.  Tour days and times:      Friday Feb 29th  - 2:00pm to 5:00pm;  Saturday March 1st - 9:00am to 5:00pm; Sunday March 2nd - 9:00am to 5:00 pm; Monday March 3rd - 9:00am to 2:00 pm.  Walk thru admission:     Adults - $10.00 donation; 12 and under - $5.00  donation.  Flights:   $425.00 per  person for B-17 & B-24… (In my dreams!!;  $325.00 / $400.00 per person for B-25.  For Flight Reservations call 800-568-8924  No reservations needed for walk thru tour.   If you need any additional information call the Collings Foundation at (978) 562-9182 or you can call the NLR Municipal Airport 

  • 15 Mar:  Potluck/Meeting hosted by Doug & Kathy Green (Bismarck)  (Saturday) 12:30 P.M.  (Potluck - Bring side dishes to go with smoked turkey and brisket) Directions: Traveling  South from Hot Springs go 12 miles on Hwy 7. Turn left on Tomahawk Lane. Go 1/2 mile on Tomahawk Lane. It is the second house on the right. Going North this would be 1 mile from the intersection in Bismarck and you would turn right on to Tomahawk Lane.     Everybody Loves the Jeep!

     Why do Americans love the Jeep?  It embodies everything Americans dream about.  It’s the freedom to go anywhere, under any conditions, at any time.  The Jeep is Freedom!  Whether you’re a real Jeeper or just have dreamed of owning a Jeep, you don’t want to miss our next lecture.  Paul Harless of the Arkansas Chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA) will talk about the military history of the Jeep from 1940 to the 1970’s.  Since its early appearance during WWII the Jeep has been the workhorse of the military.  Think you know how the Jeep got its name???  Well, there’s still a debate about that.  Learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Jeep and more!

  • 29 Mar:  Come help the North Little Rock Military Relations Committee pay tribute to the fallen soldiers and their families!  Before the event begins, we would like to line Maryland Avenue with RED, WHITE & BLUE!  This is your BIG chance to show your true American Spirit.  The event begins on March 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.  BUT we want to show our appreciation by arriving between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  Bring your AMERICAN FLAGS, large & small and wear your patriotic colors!!  Parking is available on either end of Maryland Avenue located in Sherwood, Arkansas.

    Legion Post #74 & District 15 of Arkansas cordially invite you to attend a special memorial observance Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. The ceremony is designed to honor the memory of all military personnel from the state killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Hospital Corpsman Michael Vann Johnson, Jr. who served with the 3rd Battalion Fifth Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division in Iraq was the first from Arkansas to die, was killed in an ambush on March 25, 2003. To this date, Arkansas has lost over 70 men and women who have paid the ultimate price of their life in defense of this great nation of ours.

    The American Legion takes time out during this 5th anniversary to remember all our service men and women. Memorial Services will be held at the Arkansas Veterans Cemetery located at 1501 W. Maryland Avenue, north of the North Little Rock Airport. All veterans and military personnel are invited to attend and the public is encouraged to share in this memorable occasion. Our mission is to serve God and country, the needs of veterans, their families, our communities and state. Our goal with this memorial is to keep the memory alive of those fighting in the war against terrorism for our country's freedom and democracy.   • 20 Apr:  Potluck/Meeting hosted by Bill & Debi Barnes at       Mountain Harbor Resort  2:00 p.m. (Sunday) (Mt. Ida)   (Potluck - Bring side dishes) Directions: Take 270 around Hot Springs and keep heading West on 270 toward Mt. Ida. Travel approximately 25 miles and watch for the Mountain Harbor sign at the Valero Station, just past the township of Joplin  (If you reach Mt. Ida you've gone too far.)  Turn right at the sign on Mountain Harbor road and travel approximately 2 miles.  Watch for the  AR MVPA signs.  The meeting will take place in the Military Museum 870.867.2191 billbarnes@mountainharborresort.com

  • 26 APR:  Antique Auto Display - (Sherwood) AR MVPA has been invited to display military vehicles at the large antique auto display sponsored by the CAMS Auto Club.  If you want to enter your vehicle into competition the fee is $25.00 (or $20.00 if pre registered)  There is no charge for the military vehicle display.  Money from this event will go to "Hearts & Hoofs", a riding stable to benefit disabled children.  Location directions and  contact information will be posted as it becomes available.

  • 16-17 MayAir Show at the National Air Guard Airfield (Ft. Smith)  Directions:  From Booneville travel West on Highway to Greenwood.  In Greenwood follow 10 Spur to Highway 71.  Go North on Highway 71 and get on Interstate 540 North.  Get off of Interstate 540 North at Exit 9.  You will only be on 540 for a very short distance.  The exit goes around the back side of Home Depot and brings you to a traffic light on Phoenix Avenue.  The Home Depot parking lot will be on your right.  At the traffic light turn left and the entrance to the base is immediately on your right. 

  • 23 May:  Military Vehicle Display for patriotic program at Mayflower Elementary School

  • 6-8 Jun:  Antique Auto Show in Mena We have been invited to display military vehicles   at the antique auto show on June 7.  Pre registration is necessary.  For more information check out www.amperformance.com  and www.VisitMena.com

  • 28 Jun:    Potluck/Meeting hosted by Sedric & Phyllis Wirt (N. Little Rock)  Phyllis Wirt will be serving ham, ribs and chicken.  Bring side dishes and desserts.  Directions  #1 -  Through North Little Rock traffic - Take Hwy 107 (also known as John F. Kennedy Blvd and later becomes Sylvan Hills Hwy.)  You will pass a sign for Sherwood on the right and shortly will come to the Masonic Lodge on the left.  The Sylvan Hills Hwy makes a curve to the right and Kellog turns off to the left.  You go approximately 2 miles on Kellogg Road, just past a road called Simler Rd.  The Wirt's house is a black brick house on the left of Kellogg Road (2425 Kellogg Rd) Directions #2 - (the back way)  Take the Levy St exit off I-40 turn North (left if traveling east, right if traveling west) Go 1 1/2 blocks (the first road) and cross over the railroad tracks.  This road deadends on Camp Robinson Road.  Turn left.  Follow this road until it Ys.  Keep to the right on Remount Road that goes past the NLR Airport.  (this road will become the Batesville Pike Road)  You will come to a 4 way stop.  Stay on the Pike Road to Kellogg on the right.  Go about 3/4 mile to the Wirt's house on the right.   • 04 Jul:  Fabulous Fourth (Morrilton)  Military Vehicle Display.  Free hotdogs and watermelon; entertainment; fireworks.  Vehicles should be in place in early afternoon to avoid heavy traffic.

  • 12 Jul :  CCP Class taught by Doug Green  (Bismarck)   Directions: Traveling  South from Hot Springs go 12 miles on Hwy 7. Turn left on Tomahawk Lane. Go 1/2 mile on Tomahawk Lane.   • 19 Jul : Potluck/Meeting hosted by Jerome Casey/Marsha Jones   (Greenland - near Fayetteville)  Directions:  From Hwy. 540 take Exit 58 and turn East (watch your speed from here to the church!!!)  If you were north-bound turn right.  If you were south bound - turn left and continue under the bridge.  Follow West Wilson Street (you're on it) down the hill, over the rail road tracks to the 4-way stop light.  When stopped at the light you'll be directly across from the Greenland School.  Turn south on South Main Ave (Hwy 71) - stay in the right hand lane.  Hwy 71 parallels the rail road tracks -  they should be on your right.  Head south on 71 until you approach a sweeping left-hand curve.  You'll see a small road that goes straight off 71 - take this road (it parallels the rail road tracks).  You'll see a sign for Baptist Ford Community Church.  This is kind of a bumpy, concrete road.  Follow it over the iron bridge to the church.  If you miss this turn don't panic - the road you need to be on comes back into Hwy. 71.  Just make a hard right turn on to it and you'll see the church on your left.  Any questions, problems or anything call Marsha's mobile #479.841.1489 or Jerome's mobile #479.409.9977  As for the important stuff (food) the meal will be spaghetti.

  • 16 AugPotluck/Meeting hosted by Sara & Jim Starbird (Van Buren) Take Exit 5 on I 540 at Van Buren and turn South on State59. At the first traffic light, with a Wallgreen's and a Braum's
    on each side, turn Right on Pointer Trail West. At the next fourway stop sign (by a nursing home) turn Left on Azure Hills Drive.  Follow it to the next four way stop sign at North Hills and turn Left (uphill!) Turn almost immediately Left on Robin Lane and we're the two-story house on the corner. I hope to have several militaryvehicles parked on the lawn.   • 11-13 Jul:                 Military Vehicle ShowThe 17th annual Salute to the Troops Military Vehicle Show and Swap Meet will be held July 11-13 at The Historical Military Armor Museum, 2330 Crystal St., Anderson, Indiana. The event is being sponsored by the Indiana Military Vehicle Preservation Association. There will be displays of military vehicles, tanks, jeeps and trucks. Vehicle parts and military will be available for purchase. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 11 and 12 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 13. General admission is $4 per day; $6 per weekend.
